Ncuti was born in 1992 in Rwanda and in 1994 Rwandan genocide against Tutsi began. The family of Ncuti escaped from Rwanda and settled in Scotland when he was only Two. Initially, they lived in Edinburgh and when he turned 15 they moved to Dunfermline and then to Glasgow for studies.

He attended Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh and studied in Dunfermline when he moved to Dunfermline High School. Then he graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Acting in 2013. An honorary doctorate is awarded to him by Conservatoire, at the graduation ceremony of the class of 2022.

While studying he worked at The Polo Lounge, an LGBTQ+ club, handing out flyers then became a go-go dancer.

Gatwa was born at the home of Josephine Gatwa and Tharcisse Gatwa on 15th October 1992 in Nyarugenge, Rwanda. His father is a journalist with a PhD in theology, when they moved to Scotland the family faced racial discrimination and his father didn’t get a job at the University as a black professor so he moved to Cameroon for work and his mother took care of her children. His parents raised him in a church.

Ncuti admires his parents for their hard work and how his mother does multiple jobs despite the language and cultural barrier and calls her his queen.

He started his acting career by performing on stage at Dundee Repertory Theatre. His passion for acting has made him to become one of the famous stars. The most promising role of Gatwa is as Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education(2019-present) in which he played the role of a gay teenager. He won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor and three BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance for his role in Sex Education.

In 2014, he was nominated for the Ian Charleson Award for his performance in Romeo & Juliet at Home in the role of Mercutio. In 2015, he worked in a supporting role in Stonemouth, a mini-series based on the novel.  After that, he appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Demetrius in 2016 directed by Emma Rice. In 2022, Ncuti appeared as one of the Ken’s in the movie Barbie by Greta Gerwig.

In 2023, he surprised his fans with the image of the fifteenth Doctor in the series Doctor Who season 14, by sharing the promotional shot.
