Miss Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011, on September 12, 2011, in São Paulo, Brazil, after 88 competitors. Before being title of Miss Universe Lopes was very active in many social Media forums. while studying and living in England, she participated in Miss Angola in the UK on 8 October 2010. As a stoke of fortune Lopes won the title, giving herself a big opportunity to represent Angola at the British community as Miss Angola 2010.

Lopes won the the title of Miss Angola in Luanda on 18 December 2010 by beating 20 other candidates and gaining the right to represent their Angola community in Miss Universe 2011. As she is much prettier than photos So She also won the Photogenic Award in the contest.

After being crowned Miss Universe On 12 September 2011, in São Paulo, Brazil Lopes was also crowned as Miss Universe, receiving the winning title from the former Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete of Mexico. She was honored to be the first Angolan woman to hold the position. Lopes is an African descent and the 5th woman to win the title since the beginning of the worldwide pageant which is the following:

Controversy
In 2011 After Lopes was crowned Miss Universe, charges arose that false documents were used and placed to permit her to participate in Miss Angola UK, which enabled her to compete in Miss Angola and subsequently Miss Universe. It was also claimed that when she competed Lopes had never lived outside of Angola, so exclusively for Angolan citizens living in the UK, she should not have been allowed to enter a competition by using false documents, and denied by both organizers of Miss Universe and Lopes herself said that past four years she had lived in England.
